04 Excursion no boost

I got nothin. One day I started driving it and it was just gone. Was working the day before. Been like this now about 3 weeks and the truck drives like a big old gasser, real crappy acceleration. Have not noticed any increased fuel consumption or louder than usual exhaust. Occasionally, right before the shift point to 3rd, (4wd auto), it will SEEM like the turbo kicks in for a few seconds, then shifts and -gone-. This does not happen every take off, maybe a few times in a few hours of driving. AFAIK it is the original, stock turbo. I rebuilt the one on my 7.3L with an upgraded turbine and better bushing and it no longer has that whine they make. The Excursion had the whine, slightly, but that is almost inaudible since the boost crapped, you can only hear it a bit when I'm next to a wall or a semi or something. 285k miles.

I think I should mention that I'm not a heavy footed driver and the prior owner was. I read that can have an impact on the turbo, sometimes. I've been driving it about 2 months now and this problem started about 3 weeks ago.

I got ForScan and am wondering what I can read in that software to show me where the problem is. Only DTCs are EGR-related, (I think he did the delete on it, I'll have to look), and glow plug shorts on cyl 3, 5, and 7. I live in SW Florida, don't think the glow plugs are issue but I'm willing to be wrong.

I was able to get some live data using the dashboard thing in ForScan, but I'm just grasping at what little I know about it. What should I have up to monitor and what am I looking for? Is it going to be a clear mechanical problem since no codes?

I'm a capable tech so I just need pointed in the right direction and maybe a little more education. TIA.

'03 engine in it, or the '04 engine (location of the ICP sensor)?

The catalyst is gone, but I found a sticker on the drivers side in the engine bay that boasts "Made in Mexico" and has a date of 02-17-04.

I'm not sure where the ICP is. Any identifiers that I can look for?

Your ICP sensor should be on the passenger side valve cover (assuming that the Feb, 2004 date is a build date). By the GPCM.

Don't judge me, the video below is the first on my search list. I haven't watched the video past the point at which it shows the location for the 04+ model year engine:

Yep, that's where mine is. So this is an '04 engine?

Yes.

Can you post the values for EBP, MAP, and Baro at Key-on/Engine-Off?

Also, tell us what scan tool you are using to get this PID data.

2004 changes (assuming you have read the Ford 2003.25 coffee table book - 6.0L bible).

I'm using ForScan for this information.

I recorded the KOEO and idling figures. I just got back from a 4 mile drive, so the engine was at operating temps when these figures were recorded at KOEO:

EBP, V: .98
EBP_A, kPa: 107
EBP_DSD,kPa: 11

MAP, kPa: 100.3
MAP.ODBII, kPa: 100
MAP_V, V: 1.30

BARO, kPa: 100.76
BARO.OBDII, kPa: 101
BARO_V, V: 3.42

KOEO (Key On Engine Off) values for pressure sensors are not influenced by hot or cold engine temperatures.

I assume the posted values above were all KOEO?

Go ahead and post the idle values.

EBP_DSD,kPa: 17

MAP, kPa: 100.3
MAP.ODBII, kPa: 100
MAP_V, V: 1.30

BARO, kPa: 100.76
BARO.OBDII, kPa: 101
BARO_V, V: 3.43

Those readings look appropriate.

Have you verified the EGR system (there and working, or deleted)?

Might be time to watch ICP pressure and ICP desired, along with the IPR % Duty cycle, when driving. You might have an issue (slight leak or weak HPOP) in the high pressure oil system.

I assume you looked for Charge Air or Exhaust leaks?

It is unusual not to have a turbo code for a sticking turbo. But then, a leak in the HPO system should also throw a code.

I did a visual on the cooler, in the upper-pass side where they're known to come apart. Checked all the rubber boots on the tubes. Felt around the exhaust of the turbo and that area, but have not gotten on the ground to look underneath for an exhaust leak. I don't hear or smell a leak.

I can check those values later today. Any specific metrics for those figures on the drive or will around the block a time or do yield the data?

You should get the engine warm and check the ICP numbers on the highway. Issues in the HPO system SHOULD show up a bit better with hot oil.

Ultimately, it could be an injector that just isn't throwing a code yet.
