DIY roof rack

We built a roof rack for the OTAT (On 3 Adventure Truck). This is the truck I helped my friend build (5.4 to 7.3 swap, vegetable oil conversion, etc). Since we put a 44gal Excursion fuel tank in the spare tire location, the truck needed a place to put the spare tire that didn’t use valuable real estate in the bed.

I initially wanted to make it a basket, but after getting the bottom completed - the owner decided he like the way that looked, so that’s what we built!!

It’s attached with through bolts. The SS bolts are welded to interior reinforcement plates and the plates are JB welded to the underside of roof.

He is painting it with the same black on the bed and MOVE front bumper today. Can’t wait to see it FINISHED!! This was a fun project.

Looks to be room for a shop floor jack and a small shop air compressor. Nice job.

The rack should easily support more weight than you’d want to have 8ft from the ground! I’ve got a feeling that limit will be tested as the 5-person family packs for a month long camping trip to Utah, etc.

They LOVE it!! It easily unbolted and came off for painting and went back on easily. Estimated weight 75lbs? This was a fun project. Now I want to build a basket for my truck!! Of course, I need to find time to put an engine in it first...
