So, I was amused to find yet another kind of fastener (two star drive screws) holding the MAF sensor in. Fortunately the plug wasn't as challenging as the plug on the MAP sensor was.
Torx bit. I believe it's a T20.

That's it! I tried and tried to remember what they're called, but it just wouldn't come out.

I saw these MAP threads and figured l better check my 17 that has 435000km now, all by me. It was dirty as expected but after four tanks of fuel, post cleaning, l see no difference. The truck's fuel economy has been pretty consistent all its life.

Drove over 700 miles today. No change in MPG with a clean MAP sensor. So while it may be an improvement for a fullly clogged sensor I don't think it has any effect as long as there is enough of an opening so it can "sense".

You probably nailed it Scott and maybe it's just a placebo effect knowing that it's clean for us "overkill" type guys.

I was looking forward to the high on power with better mileage .....now ..... same old, same old.

I need a steep mountain to climb pulling the trailer.

I think Scott got it exactly right. My fuel mileage had dropped considerably. Where once I was able to achieve 17 mpg unloaded on the highway, I was doing good to get 12 mpg. My MAP sensor was completely blocked and my CCV was really loaded up (probably clogged). Cleaning those two items (actually replacing) has had an immediate and positive effect on my mileage. I drove into the city the other day and was getting an indicated 15 mpg driving around 63 mph.
Historically, my truck has gotten it's best mileage at 55 mph with it losing about 2 mpg with every 10 mph increase.
The MAP sensor clearly plays a key role in fuel management, and a clogged sensor cannot do it's job. It stands to reason that a partially blocked sensor is not going to be as adversely affected.

I pulled the MAP sensor and cleaned it with Mass Air flow cleaner. Didn't look too bad but did get carbon junk out of it.

Doing preps to head into the mountains for archery elk hunt, and I’m at 77,291 miles. Bought MAF cleaner the other day in prep to clean MAP. I did both the MAP and MAF for the first time. mAP was partially plugged, but likely still working well since over half the sensor hole was open. Oddly when I started the truck after cleaning the sensors it made a loud clattering noise like an old diesel sounded. Shocked the heck out of me! It was only for a fraction of a second, and then it sounded normal. Sounded normal on another restart too. Something weird happened in conjunction with sensor cleaning.

Sorry MAP picture doesn’t show the sensor opening better.

What's your take away on the S&B MAP sensor spacer? Does it or does it not help to keep the sensor head cleaner?

I just wanted to drop a note and say be careful how you clean this sensor. I pulled mine today and it was nasty like some of the pictures in this thread. I gently scraped a little bit of the excess soot off of it and then I cleaned up inside of the sensor with some carbon build-up cleaner designed for intake valves on direct injection engines. Cleaned everything real good and dried it up and reinstalled the sensor. Next time I drove the truck I got all kinds of check engine lights and my truck went into limp mode. Now I have to buy a $80 sensor and drive another car to town to pick it up tomorrow.

You made two mistakes........ Do not scrape the sensor, and use MAP/MAF sensor cleaner ONLY. Hold the sensor with the hole pointed downward and spray the MAP cleaner spray on the bottom and inside the hole allowing the cleaner to drip back out as you are spraying. I used an entire can of MAP sensor cleaner to get mine clean without any scraping.
