Hello all........ Last April I picked up a leftover 01 X limited V10. I traded an 02 SDSC for it and could not be happier with the trade. I'm having a problem with the back glass rubbing against the back doors and taking the paint off and digging into the fiberglass. I took the X to the dealer and they made arrangements to have it taken care of (no body shop at the dealer so they sent it to a local guy - as i'm in the glass business I know first hand that the guy is very good). I got the X back and the problem is not fixed. The back glass is just taking the new paint off. I was told that they adjusted the doors and repainted them. When I took it back to the service manager he kind of just told me to deal with it that all of the X's do it. He claims that because of the size of the vehicle that the doors will flex and that is causing the rubbing. I pointed out that the scratches are only front to back and not side to side at all like his scenario would suggest. He proceded to tell me that they all do it and there was nothing more that they could do. My next question was why in the hell would they even bother to send it out to be adjusted and painted if they all did it and it would continue? He had no answer. At that point I just had to walk away because the blood pressure was rising quickly. I put in a call the their customer satisfaction gal and explained the situation. She will be checking into this to see what their next course of action will be. Has anyone else run into this same problem with the back doors? If so is there any way to correct it? I did take the interior trim off of the top half and tried to move the plastic at the bottom of the back glass up but there is no adjustments there. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
My 2000 does it. I bought it used, and it was already worn there, so I can live with it. If I paid $40K plus for a new one, I wouldn't be happy about it.
Even with the abuse I put it through off road I get none of the symptoms mentioned above on my 2k

My 2000 limited does not rub. My neigbors 2000 xlt does rub and has not been fixed. Good luck on your problems and let us know what happens with customer service!
I have a 2002 Excursion. I was reading through the Recall/TSB section with my truck in mind. I found a report depicting your problem, but for my 2002. If you want, look under the Recall/TSB section. Select 2002 Excursion (I know yours is an '01, but trust me), and scroll down about nine entries (service bulletin no. 0214) and you will see the topic is Engine, but if you open this article, you will scroll down and see the exact issue you are having. Within this service bulletin you will find article no. 01-24-7 (titled "Body-Top Surface of Rear Cargo Doors Scratched").
Look on the back of your tailgate. Make sure there are 2 little rubber nubbins/bumpers. If you lose this IT WILL RUB! Often they are lost when you take it to a full-service car wash. If some wipes around the back hatch area these suckers will fall right out. Check for this before you go any further. Look at a new one and they are very obvious. Mine repeatedly fell out until I siliconed them in to stay!
First report on my new Excursion:

'04 X 6.0PSD has 2000 miles.
It has been flawless except for one slight problem: fit and finish were too tight on the back hatch, _plus_ the little rubber bumpers were falling off, causing the clearcoat [and eventually what would be the paint] on the top surface of the lower doors to be scored. Factory sent new heftier rubber bumpers; body shop to repaint doors "real soon now". How long did it take for YOU to notice that those are fiberglass back doors?
Everything else has been fantastic, especially the drivetrain and MPG - 15+ mixed city/hwy, and diesel is 13 cents cheaper than 87 octane in north Atlanta.
My 2000 XLT has a plastic tape protector on top of the rear doors similar to what is used to protect the top surface of snow skis. I can see a crease where the rubber weather strip rests on the protector, so I'm sure if it were not there, it would be rubbing through the paint. Looks like the protector was professionally installed, but it could be done by anyone.

Reason: spelling
The thing about the little bumpers is that they WILL fall off...
my 02 4x2 had the same problem... they fixed with a laminate and paint on the top...
but my 03 4x4 hasn't shown any signs of doing that in 24K+ miles...
Has anyone else run into this same problem with the back doors? If so is there any way to correct it?
I am also experiencing rubbing though it has not worn through the paint. I have not done anything yet to address it but I like the suggestion here to apply clear 3M vinyl to the top of the doors. I will visit Ziebarts, where they applied the vinyl to the hood, headlights, and bumpers, and see what price they give for the rear doors.
Just tbuy a handful of the spare rubber bumpers so u have the ready...
would think they are cheap insurance...
All of my rubber bumpers are intact. The rubber bumpers themselves are gradually working at the clearcoat. That is why I thought the clear vinyl was a good idea. Obviously clear vinyl would do nothing if the rubber bumpers were not there at all.
