Interior light door switch repair tutorial
My drivers door switch for the interior lights has never worked when opening the door since I bought the van. You could push the switch in by hand and let it snap back out and it would work great, that time. So today I thought I would get around to doing this simple fix and document it to help others that might not know what to expect .
The interior light switch is located on the frame just in front of the drivers door. When you open the door you will see it. In my case there is also a speaker wire just below the light switch.

Here is the Motorcraft part number you will need or find an aftermarket switch.

On my 1988 van, I had to use a 9/16 socket to remove the old switch ( a wrench would work fine) and install the new one. According to the diagram in my 1988 EVTM. (the colors do not seem to match up all the way) the red wire is for the seat belt and key switch buzzer. Black with blue stripe is for the dome and cargo lights and lastly, Grey with yellow is the power. Each year van may differ from my 88. As you see in the pic, my switch is broken near the connector plug. You can also see a slot in the connector. You need to depress the tap to separate the connector from the switch. There are 3 tabs on the new switch but it doesn't matter which one you use as the all make contact at the same time when the switch is closed.

After installing the new switch you will notice that the new switch sticks way out compared to the old switch. Do not worry about this, it is normal and the switch is designed this way. While slowly closing the door, the copper or brass sleeve on the switch will be pressed in and adjust itself to where it needs to be.
And that's about it!

A little extra here for you in case the switch doesn't fix the issue . This is from a 1988 EVTM so your model may vary. You can usually find a Ford EVTM for your exact year for sale online. I recommend them for any one who does their own repairs.
