After having issues with a brake light working and then not working, I found a few posts about the tilt putting strain on the wires going into the multifunction switch within the steering column. I got everything apart and I found that the top and bottom clips on the plug are broken. When unplugging the wires, I broke the little plastic pieces holding each wire, so now they don't stay in there securely and are loose. Is it possible to buy just the small grey plug? I don't need the entire switch...which is like $75 bucks. Thanks!
Probably the only place you can buy the connector is through Ford or you could check at a salvage yard. As far as your brake light problem, have you checked your brake light switch ? Over time the contacts in the switch can burn out which is what happened with mine. More than likely this is your problem.
I've put together some photos from the switch replacement I performed on my 99 Expedition showing the contact failure of the switch. Yours may differ slightly from mine as I have the adjustable peddels. A new switch will run you approx. $15 and it takes about 5 minutes to change out. Be careful when changing it you don't loose the plastic bushing that fits on the small shaft the switch mounts to. Let me know if this helps or if you have any other questions.
