I have a 1970 F100 on a 76 Highboy chassis. Really a nice driver with a swapped 429 and 4 speed. I'm sorting out a few things and I'm onto the steering. The previous owner had swapped a later model tilt column into the truck and also did the 78 steering box conversion. Power steering. However, the lower bearing in the column is bad, and the steering shaft u-joint is shot. I'm not really familiar with the model changes but the steering shaft has the clamp coupler on the steering column end and a rag joint on the steering box end. I want to change the column bearing and entire shaft assy to the steering box. Not being familiar with what year parts I'm dealing with, any ideas on what to order?
You have a 2wd column with a rag joint. 4wd's never had a rag joint. You have a system that is made up of two completely different systems. Get a Borgeson shaft and joints to connect it. The column bearings you should be able to find at most Ford parts houses. https://www.borgeson.com
1/2 ton 4wd in the 73-79 flavor have a flex (rag) joint in the steering shaft set up. 73-79 2wd F250's also have a rag joint. If it is a 76 HB chassis and a 78/79 steering box conversion it SHOULD have a steering shaft with a u joint, that is NOT replaceable. At least not in the way you would think a u joint it replaceable. X2 on get a Borgeson one and have no worries. https://www.borgeson.com/?target=sea...&including=all
