Last Saturday, I set out from Durango CO to San Diego pulling a cargo trailer. My 2001 F-150 (0riginal sticker price $32,000) has 184,000 miles and is regularly maintained. 140 miles into the trip, it went into limp mode and I parked it and called AAA. After waiting 6 hours on the Navajo Reservation, flat bed showed up and was towed into the Ford dealer in Flagstaff. Service department at Babbit Ford fired up the truck Monday morning and it ran just fine and diagnostics showed no codes. Going to pick it up tomorrow and hope for the best. I use non-ethanol gas delivered to my own tank on the property. Wife's Pacifica had the same fuel from the same tank with no issues. I have no problem pouring money into this truck as the registration is $59 a year and insurance is a pittance. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
My thoughts: Not enough information about the problem when the truck went into limp mode or what the dealership has done .
Truck limited to 5MPH. No power. Got to the dealer on a rollback on Saturday and Monday morning ran just fine and diagnostic tests showed no codes. Road tested twice with no issues and no codes!
Any number of things can cause a limp mode.
Here's an article explaining many of the possible causes. If the dealer couldn't find it then likely no one else will either. You may have to wait for more symptoms to show up for more clues.
Is this tow a regular occurrence? Does the truck have the factory tow package with the aux trans cooler and bigger radiator? How heavy a load and how big a trailer?
That’s most of 7,000’ elevation and thin air/lower air pressure/boiling points that make overheating way easier than at sea level.
That’s just off the wall guesses. We know nothing but “Hey guys, my truck overheated.” Literally. I guess you have a Triton v8 from the sticker price, but another guess.
I'd carry a scanner of some sort for live data next time..
I always go Gallup to I40 for this very reason. Nothing but "LLANTAS!!" and revivals from Cortez to Flag the other way, and no shoulder to even pull off.
Drove 325 miles from Flagstaff yesterday with no issues. Friend towed the trailer back. I'm going to have the transmission flushed and the filter replaced. Also installing a trans cooler with temp gauge

The transmission wouldn't have caused your symptoms. Good luck
Took it to another shop and codes showed that the mass air flow meter was clogged or dirty. Cleaned the mass air flow meter and it runs like a champ. Also had a transmission cooler installed just to be on the safe side. Diagnostic showed low voltage, so replaced the 4 year and 6 month old battery with a new one.
