ac charging

Can someone refresh my memory of how to jump start the ac compressor? I had to replace a hose then I vacuumed the system. So, starting out I remember having to use a paper clip to jump the compressor into action to get the system to draw in Freon. How do you do that?? Thanks

Low switch on dryer or shoot some gas in to light it off.

It needs 38oz I believe b

Yup. What hit man said. I read 2 pounds 6 ounces if completely empty. Basically 2 cans of 134 and a can of oil. Or, 2 1/2 cans. I start the gas going then jump the switch wire. Once you get a can or so in the switch will work like it should.

Sounds good but I didn't think I had to put any oil in because I didn't change the compressor. Isn't the oil still in the compressor? Thanks guy!

When you hook the can up it should provide enough pressure to activate the low side switch. It may cycle a few times while filling but no big worry.
yea oil will be in the various components, just jack it up and enjoy the cold.

agreed. pull vacuum, and charge. no need to jump anything. the first can will put enough in to get the low side cycling, then the second can will suck in as the compressor turns on.
by the time you get to the third can the compressor should stay running.
134 cans are only 12 ounces, so you need 3 cans for the 38 ounce system.

Thanks Tom and everybody else. I'm pretty cool for an old guy now, lol.

On a side note while I had the gauges etc out I checked out my old 1998 VW Beetle. Cooling lately has been intermittent so I found out that the high side is over 400! Low side is normal but google said its either overcharged, blockage somewhere or the compressor is about shot. I can believe that the compressor might be on its way out, its had a very hard life. First I'll try to get the pressure down, I don't think there is a blockage but I'm guessing a new compressor is in the future.

with a high side of 400, i would be leery of standing close when running.
the rubber hoses tend to blow around 500 psi. (yes, i know this from experience)
i would bet there is crud in the system from a failing compressor blocking the orifice tube.

Check the condenser for any blockage and fan(s) for operation.

Fixed an old Honda with dual fans that had crap temps at idle due to one fan being dead.

before throwing parts at the VW look at cooling fans and condenser for trash on it can spray water on it to see if pressure drops a lot
in my experience when high goes way up low side drops a lot from a blockage, but low side stays up with poor cooling of condenser
