Got a 3" brake shoe on the front of my '68 F100 causing a squeal when the metal edge of the shoe hits the drum as the brakes are applied.
I see a shiny edge of the shoe and a shiny ring inside the drum at the inside corner. Any ideas what could be the cause? Maybe the old spring not keeping the shoe tight to the backing plate?
Shoe to wide for the drum?
What are the options for the front shoes for your truck was a 3" even an option?
That 3" look too wide for a F100, I think something like 2.5 wide
I take it they are new did you do the job or someone else?
If you and still have the old shoes measure across them to see what they are.
Dave ----
EDIT
I just looked up brakes for your truck with a 300 six and it dose list a 11 x 3 and a 11 x 2 for the front.
The rear has listed 11 x 2.31 so guessing a 11 x 2.25
So if your truck came with 3" shoes then the drum may need to be turned to have the drum clear the edge of the shoes.
1968/72 F100 2WD's have 11" x 3" front brakes, 11" x 2 1/4" rear brakes.
1967/72 F100 4WD's have 11" x 2" front brakes, 11" x 2 1/4" rear brakes.
Thanks
I looked up on line and got the same sizes but it did not list for 4x2 or 4x4 and he did not say what he had.
But I did see they listed the 3" shoes so he has something going on he needs to fix.

OP said he had a 1968 F100 with 3" front brakes. 4WD's had 2" front brakes, so the OP has a 2WD

See edited post #3.
I did see your post after the fact of me looking if a 3" shoe was even a option.
At the time I did not know 4x4 had the smaller shoe and the poster nor on line store listed it as 4x2 or 4x4.
He is going to have to pull the drums and check over the install and most likely have to have the drums turned to clear the shoes.

Something is going on, I wonder if the shoes were replaced, but the drum was not turned. There could be a ridge in the drum, allowing the shoes to rub.
As the 2nd Owner of this truck, I found the shoes had cracked linings so I had the drums turned and used new shoes made by Bosch. I've got a set of Wagner shoes coming along with all new hold down and retraction springs. Keeping my fingers crossed.
Thanks for your suggestions and info.
Is this happening on one side or both? If only one side, did you replace shoes on both sides? If not, compare sides to see if there is a difference. Fingers crossed will not fix the problem

I see you did turn the drums I wounder if they did not reach in far enough and why it hits?
Dave ----
I finished cutting off the excess width of the backing plate on a 4 shoes for the front end and also found that the squealing brake drum was not machined the same distance as the passenger side by .029". Should work fine and be quiet as far as squealing is concerned. Thanks for everybody's thoughts on this problem.
