Started some time back, stall ( driver error 5sp ) would not restart 20-30 min. would restart. About 9-12 months go by wife stalls 20-30 min. restart. Another 12 months go by another stall, this time no restart at all. Truck sat for 4 months decided it was about time to get this thing going again. Had to charge battery hook it back up and it started right up. Some how truck being stalled was keeping it from starting. The last time I think unhooking battery reset something and let it start. Never had problem with restarts when shut down properly (with key). Any Help Much Appreciated.
Lots of unknowns, takes fuel, spark & air to make them run, so whats going missing when it stalls, or won't restart?
Use, borrow, or come by the inexpensive ELM scan-tool & running FORScan diagnostic freeware as discussed here Low Cost ELM Scantool - Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums (ford-trucks.com) , as this inexpensive but powerful combo can access all the vehicle computer / controllers for trouble code clues. So have it scan for trouble codes & post All code Numbers as they can help focus a trouble shoot.
If you don't want to do that, use your fuel pressure gauge to check for pressure & your timing light to safely check for spark when it stalls but won't restart & let us know what you find.
Some initial trouble shooting thoughts for consideration.
I would look for something temperature related. It could even be the coolant or air temp sensors fooling the computer. Second thing that could be sensitive is anything with a winding, such as a coil or relay. Gets hot, and the winding heats and expands just a touch and doesn't conduct any more until it cools and makes contact again.
Do you hear the fuel pump run for a few seconds when you first turn the ignition from OFF to ON. Listen the next time, and if no run, pump, driver or relay could be a possible cause. Given you have COPs odds are that not all have a problem at once that comes and does, ditto for the injectors. You could check for power to the COPS and injectors with the key ON. No power==no spark/squirt.
The PDB would be the next thing to look at, if you live in a salty area especially.
