My 1999 Expedition starting something strange. The amber overdrive "OFF" light on the shifter column started blinking. The transmission seems ok and no other dash warning lights are illuminated. The manual doesn't mention this situation. Has anyone else experienced this? What is the truck trying to tell me? Thanks.
This isn't first hand knowledge, just what I heard:
The flashing on/off on the overdrive is kind of like a "check engine" light for the transmission... Your dealer has a code scanner to read whatever code it's getting... Don't let too much time pass before you get to the dealer.
The overdrive on/off light will flash whenthe tranny is overheating. Low on fluid or hauling too heavy or big a load in overdrive. If it's the latter, letting it cool off for 20 minutes will make it go out, and you will know not to drive in overdrive with that load, just normal 3rd gear drive.
If it it's low on fluid it will come back on. If neither of the above applies, it means things are going to get expensive if it's not just a bad temperature sensor. In any case, get to the dealer's pronto if you can't change or test the sensor yourself at home.
It could also mean that there is a major malfunction in the tranny. Get it looked at ASAP, because if you do not it will cost you a lot more money. Wife’s blinked at 28,000 and almost all of the tranny is replaced to the tune of $2,500.
Mine blinked when I had a situation that was sometimes causing a false neutral during the 2-3 upshift. $250 repair. Go to the dealer asap. It may not be a catastrophe, but could be if you let it go long enough.
Trust me, the dealer can save you money in the long run, might be a valve sticking in the valve body, just a sensor, or the internal pressures out of spec......
Somewhat good news. I brought the truck to a nearby Ford dealer that works on transmissions. Evidently the problem was with the 2nd to 3rd shift valve. The repair was $300. If this had not worked, the verdict would have been a new transmission at $2100. I'll cross my fingers. Thanks for the good advice.
