Hey all. Just about to purchase a 2000 EB Expedition that is fully loaded apart from the backup sensor, anyone know if this can be retrofitted ? WHat sort of cost ?
I have the AutoPark on my 98' and it works just OK. When it rains and snows it acts a little funny, like constant beeping in reverse. But normally works good when not blocked by snow. It's only $30 and works well enough for $30. You can change the distance to be warned while backing up. I get a slow beep at around 6' from an object and a steady beep about 2' from object. Speaker is pretty loud and I mounted it with doublesided tape inside the rear drivers side of the truck. It is a 15 minute install. Mounts right to the license plate and wired to trailer wiring harness. I would retrofit to the Ford bumper mounted sensors instantly if someone else has tried it out, please advise. But for the cost the AutoPark works well enough to save the cost of backing into to something.
There are times when backing into tight parking spots that I would love to have either the reverse sensing system, or the AutoPark. It can be a little tricky sometimes.
I did not take any pictures while putting in, but I can take a few shots if you want to see actual unit. I drilled a hole in the license plate near the top to feed the wires through. Routed through the bumper right down to the harness for the trailer lights. I don't remember which color wire was for the reverse lights on that harness but I can crawl under truck and give a peek later on. I routed the speaker wire through a grommet that went into the rear drivers side fender panel without having to drill. It really is a 15 minute install.
FYI, look on ebay for a backup sensor/system. They have the kind like the dealers have and can get 4 sensors instead of just one. I personally haven't tried one, but I imagine they're pretty good. Some of the places offer the kind where you cut holes and install them, or they can use a 3m tape I believe. Just another option!
