Proper engine warmup

I wake mine up about twenty minutes before I go to work in the morning (ten-fifteen minute drive). It's starting to warm up some here in ND though, so I'll probably be cutting that down to ten or fifteen minutes. By the time I get about halfway to work and onto the interstate, my temperature gauge is already showing right in the middle of itself. Maybe idling for that long is bad, maybe not, but that's what I do. I drive it hard every now and then, so carbon build up isn't a huge worry for me.

I try to get mine up to 70*F before I take off, and I try to get up to operating temp every time I start it to make sure all the moisture is removed from the oil. Notice I said TRY! Sometimes you just can't do it!
Is it possible for you to leave 10-15 mins early and go for a longer drive on the way to work just to bring the temp up a bit more? Diesels don't make much heat just sitting & idling...

The trade-off is spending money on extra fuel and the wear and tear of unnecessary driving vs damage caused by low engine temps and short drives.
Most of the short drives I do in the truck are between 5 and 10 minutes. I don’t want to drive around for 15 minutes extra.
Maybe I should buy a Honda.
