Do all 2004 F250 SD's use the fancy transponder keys?
My new-to-me F250 SD CrewCab only came with one key and one remote (damn the previous owner and the car lot guy that took the vehicle in that way). I've already ordered two more remotes and I don't expect to have any problem programming them to the truck (same process as my CrownVic).
I also need at least one more key. I figure I'm going to have to go through the hassle (and the expense) of having the key programmed at a dealer or auto locksmith, but looking at the key that I have it doesn't have the hugh plastic head like my other Ford transponder keys. The key does have a plastic head, but not the large one like on my other Ford keys. Is it really a transponder key or did Ford make some F250s with regular keys?
When I was at the hardware store I got plain old (No plastic) keys made for my 04'. I keep a spare key in my wallet just in case. Opens the doors, starts the truck and does everything the OE key does.
My 04 has just a regular key, but I think I read somewhere that the Harley Davidson editions had the big chipped key. Could be a false memory though, I'm 40 now and CRS (cant remember s@#*) seems to be setting in. What year did the Harley editions start?
'04 was the first year of the SD Harley and even those do not have a chipped key. No SD's thru '07 have a chipped key, only the Excursion's had it. '08 was the first year it was available on the SD and it was standard equipment on the higher trim level trucks and optional on the lower trim level trucks. For '09 it became standard equipment on all SD's...
I got my 04 with one key and remote, I asked the dealer where I bought it for another set, and they cut me a new key and gave me an extra remote for free. You might try asking the dealer to get you another set.

That's exactly what I did with the 2004 CV that I bought at a Ford Dealer, but it doesn't work as well with used car lots. I probably could have gotten the lot to cover the cost if I was willing to walk away on the deal, but the deal was too good to pass up.
