Engine Temp--160 vise 200 deg

I've purchased and installed one of the chip programers (no names) and in the instructions they stated the thermostat should be changed from the stock 200 deg to a 160 deg (which they will be happy to sell you).
I was wondering what you thought about running the 5.4L at this lower temp? As for heat in the cab, I live in Hawaii and I've never had the heat "on" (we are always 80 deg here).

how do you know that it will give you ten horses. And i dont think it would be good at all in colder temperatures.

Ken (webmaster) in the Computer Tuning forum, which is a ways further down on the main forum page, knows tons about chips and programmers. He probably has some good advice about thermostats if you want to ask there too.

MHO.

I'd put money on that the 160 t-stat does nothing more than cause the pcm to think that it's in cold start mode, thus supplying more fuel to the combustion chamber, causing poorer milage, and accelerated engine wear from increased cylinder washout.

Only benefit would be a small increase in power, maybe 1-2 hp max.

Hardly worth the cost of accerated engine wear and poorer milage.

The stock t-stat is well suited for your type of engine.

Does the chip programmer re-set the pcm so it doesn't look for the higher temp ? I agree the engine runs allot better meaning it feels like it's getting more fuel thus creating more power.
The change I have is in lower RPM's now. I get better response and torque but this change is only felt by an owner who's had his truck for some time and has become "one-with-it" (meaning your wife doesn't drive it and load it up with carbon--- lol---She'd kill me if she read that).
As a matter a fact, my trucks lifted with huge meats on it / headers / intake blah-blah-blah and I can't keep her butt out of it. She tells me to drive the Honda---
Thanks for your input

Typically the only thing that a chip does is advance the timing and trim the fuel curve, this is why higher octanes of gas are needed, and where your extra power is gained.

I highly doubt that your chip would over ride any other pcm controls, with the exception of speedo calibration, and other exceptions for highly modded engines (like maf, headders, blowers, nos, etc.).

Changing to a lower t-stat is generally deterimental to the overall life of the motor, and I'd strongly reccomend against it. Going with a lower t-stat also keeps your oil from burning of condensation and other junk as quickly.
