Distributor Roll Pin

So I had an issue where my truck died, wouldn't start, etc. Troubleshooted, replaced carb, gaskets etc. Come to find out the truck is out of time due to a sheered distributor roll pin. I have a HEI distributor. What roll pin do you all suggest? I read that the silver ones tend to sheer easier and there is no OEM available.

There are two types, split pins and roll pins. They are like nuts and bolts, all you have to do is figure out the size and the length. You can use a drill bit in the hole to figure out the size, and measure for the length.

I see Harbor Freight sells a "roll pin" assortment but if you look in the link, they are really split pins which look like a "C" from the end. A roll pin looks like a Little Debbie Swiss Rolls and is rolled and is stronger.

I would make sure you do not have oil pump problems, that can shear the pins.

@Franklin2 thanks for the info, I didn't think about Harbor Freight. Is there a way to check if I have oil pump problems?

You can take the correct size socket, tape it to a long extension so it doesn't fall in the engine, and then slip it down in the dist hole till it engages the shaft that goes to the pump. Turn it with your fingers and see if it turns ok with just a little resistance.

Gear should be a very tight pressed fit.

Top quality roll pins can be sourced from gunsmith supply vendors. They can supply the correct punches to remove/install too.
