223. There is no mix and match between those and the later 240/300.
Maybe its C
3 AE.....
Or--long shot--a replacement block cast in '68. But that's beyond the 24 and 36 month warranties of that era. Industrial?
Best bet is it's C3, just so crusty it looks like C8.
Look for the date code cast into the block. See:

That's the stuff. Got out my mini wire brush and cleaned it up and it is C3. Which makes the date stamp of 4B18 way more sense lol

@Kruse , Fram is new to my so I'm just digging into it. Its an 87ish AOD trans with a custom adapter. So my guess is its stock to that trans. Here is a better pic.

The AOD is a delicate flower and usually needs a throttle valve properly adjusted to shift right and not burn up.
So when you get to that point, check that out.
Swerving suggestion.....

The engine is 60-64. A 59 or earlier would have a valve cover with two studs rather then bolts on the perimeter. So the C3 number makes sense.

Good catch on the valve cover.

223 was used in passenger cars and trucks from 1954 thru 1964. The intake/exhaust manifolds are on the left (drivers side) of the engine.
