I just got a 99 f-150 single cab short bed 4.6 with a 5 speed manual and 4x4 truck is in great shape 1 owner 150k I have maintenance records since new very well taken care of. It has got to be the most gutless truck I have ever drove I was excited thought v8 5sp this thing would be fun to drive but I was wrong I'm not looking for a race truck or a lot of power but I think a geo metro might beat me in a race. No codes it sat for 2 years not being started but started right up I've put 5k on it in 1 1/2 months very reliable. I cleaned gas tank but it was already very clean changed fuel pump, fuel filter, installed high flow cats and a free flow muffler, spark plugs and wires, coil packs, air filter, fuel pressure regulator, cleaned mass air flow sensor, did air box mod nothing has helped getting 13-15mpg downshift on every hill or if wind blowing. Any ideas on what to do next? And if lugged at all it kinda chugs.
It's 4 wheel disc and the brakes look good and tires turn freely. I was thinking something egr or intake manifold related or maybe timing but it starts up instantly every time still stumped
Can't remember if that y/m and engine has the flat panel air filter or the round bullet shape, if it has the bullet shape, make sure the hard plastic nose is pointing away from the engine.
The timing is digital and has no adjustment
The EGR should throw a code
The low flow ones that I have fixed (the 4.6 is notorious for code P0401)
Gain power, according to the owners
You would think low EGR flow would net more power
The port clogs up in the 4.6 intake elbow to the throttle plate
Good luck
Thanks for the advise. With the timing I was thinking maybe something happened with the guides or tensioner but then I would probably hear some kind of noise in there
With 150k the timing chains might be getting loose
The guides might also be worn or broken
Those 4.6s are more forgiving than the 5.4s and you are right about the noise
IIRR you can check for a stretched chain and cam timing using the CMP hole in the left bank cylinder head
Make sure the spark plugs are Motorcraft
If you do go in the motor replacing timing components, use all Ford stuff and replace the tensioners too
You checked for codes right?

Not really the case after 1996. The older ones did.
Grand marquis had that engine with 2.73 gearing . No power but on a flat highway can hit 30mpg.

I had a 2003 4.6 auto with 3.55 gears and unless you had it up in the higher rpms it was a gutless truck and the mpg is about what you are getting. Even at higher rpms it didn't have much power for a V8 but it was a dependable motor.
I still think something is wrong with the truck but I tried running the rpms higher and don't use 5th gear unless cruising 75,80 on flats and seems a little better. My everyday driver before this I still have is a diesel so I wasn't used to the higher rpm thing.

All the modular OHC motors need to spin. They're like the antithesis of diesel. But unlike older pushrod motors they're perfectly happy to hang out close to redline indefinitely.
