04, f350, 60000 miles does have a hyperteck mileage tune, 4 inch turbo back exhaist system and that is it. About 3 years ago it began to buck and surge when idling at a light/stop sign etc. no codes, had been running well up to that point. Picked up the trailer we went to get and then no issues. Yesterday went 150 miles and it stared to do it again. stop at light/stop sign and it began to buck and act like and actually did stall 1 time. It feels like it is not dropping out of gear at stops idle will drop 2-300 rpm. I put in neutral and reved engine no smoke of any kind. Later it would do the same in neutral. So dont know what it could be sticking egr, sticking turbo ??.
The engine has had studs, head gaskets, bpd egr, new oil cooler. temps on gauge are usually 7 deg or less on the highway yesterday were 188 water., 195 oil always consistent.
You need to monitor your IPR and ICP when this happens. I am having a similar issue on my 05. Same scenario, no codes. I installed the blue spring regulator kit. I thought it was fixed, but it still did it. Then took it out for long highway run. It hasn't occurred since then, and seems to run even better after a heavy tow. I am leaning toward a stiction issue myself, so maybe injectors are in my future. Could be an ICP getting ready to fail. Make sure your ICP pigtail is good. Try wiggling the wire at the ICP when its happening at idle.
Hank85713,
I have changed my ICP and ICP pigtail. Someone (previous owner) thought they were an electrician and put a crimp and shrink splice on the ICP pigtail. They even twisted the wires before inserting them into the splice. They shrunk it down, but didn't crimp it. The local dealer couldn't figure it out, but i spotted it when swapping the ICP sensor. ICP sensor can be changed with a wrench or socket. Looks like 15/16 size wise. I would recommend only dealer or verified motorcraft as far as brand. Little pricy, but why pay twice for cheap parts?
The socket you need depends on the model year of engine. For '04 engines, you need to specify if the ICP is behind the turbo or on the passenger valve cover,
did you do individually or both at 1 time? Mine is 04 late 03 build I believe. There are several youtube videos on this but they use crescent wrenches for a tight area is why I asked about wrench size for IPR.
If your '04 was built on Sept 29, 2003 or later, then the ICP sensor will be on the passenger side valve cover and take a 15/16 wrench or 12mm. OR use a deep socket.
EARLY ICP: 27 mm deep socket (or 1-1/16"). depends on the type of deep socket also, not all of them have room for the length due to the connector. That said IMO this works best: use a 1 1/16 inch 12 point crows foot - or a wrench cut down to 6 inches.
I am looking for the parts and ford is pricey. Has anyone used any of the diesel alternatives like sinister, bostech or any others? I know most say OEM but there doesnt seem to be a dealer I can find with better pricing! Anyone that can help with a dealer?
Tasca Ford Parts has been a common place, but the internet is full of complaints now and an F rating at BBB - showing parts to be in inventory and not having them. Wow - if true, then that is disappointing!
Having trouble getting on the AutoNation White Bear Lake website also for some reason. Hopefully that is only a "momentary glitch"!
FordParts.com will get you some good discounts on many items. You can buy from them and have the parts delivered to a local dealership - no shipping charge and very little wait time (sometimes no waiting). Prices vary a lot when purchasing in this manner so you need to know what the discounted price is that you want!
Bismic thanks for reply, but ford parts does not list an ICP sensor everything goes to the IPR. Local dealer wants $426 + for that. Sinister and BP I think it was are about 1/2 price for the IPR. Just dont know if they are any good.
again thanks for the help.. the white bear say they are undergoing maintenance??
Late 03 build doesn't get to the exact need. '04's that are built after 9/29/03 use '04 parts. Before that use '03 parts. Which would yours be? The '03's have the ICP sensor behind the turbo and the '04 have it on the passenger valve cover.
Thank you again, getting dizzy looking at all the sites and the $$ differences. Dealers in $400+ ranges aftermarket all over $50-300 pigtail kits all over also I think that the IPR AND ICP are supposed to take the same kit (?). Amazon has them says they are motocraft but I dont know. Saw a video a couple of yeaars ago on motorcraft packaging white on red, white on red over black. Cant remember which is supposed to be correct. But anyhow the riffraff is about midway price wise. So thanks again.
