Guys above are correct, that’s the breather. It just slides on a barbed fitting. That cap is factory, it’s there to prevent debris from getting in. Take that hose off and blow through it to make sure it isn’t plugged solid. Most likely won’t be, but never hurts to make sure while it’s all apart.

Yet another transfer case question. Attached are pics of the front case where the adapter gasket sits. Note the severe pitting on outside edges of the mating surface. Does anyone think that this front case needs to be replaced because of this? I'm just wondering if the gasket will properly seal or not.

That cap was on there from the factory. I extend the breather hoses I can find up into the body with an inline fuel filter on the end.

Those corroded areas are where the gasket doesn't touch. Dirt and debris can find its way into the voided area and cause corrosion. It won't cause any issue with the gasket sealing. Before you reassemble everything, clean it really well with gasoline and acetone and spray those areas with zinc chromate spray paint to prevent further corrosion.
