Early E4OD wimpy shifts

Bought a 89 F 250 that I presume it has a early E4OD as the trans looks like the one in my 95,trans kind of shifts wimpy so is that the way they are. Its going to get a fluid change soon as its most likely original with 119,000 miles and my 95 seems to shift a little firmer.

Noticed it getting torque converter shudder so the fluid was changed but did not fix the shudder so it got some Sea Foam trans conditioner and is doing fine and shifting a little better,I thought it still had the original fluid but had been changed but probably not from the converter so it still had some original fluid. The filter and that fluid had about 10,000 miles on it.

Yes, that's very normal. Factory E4OD's shift very, very, very soft. You can fix them by installing one of these:

The Installation Of Transgo's 'Tugger' Reprogramming Kit (Shift Kit For HD Hauling & Towing)

the installation of transgo's E40D-HD2-D reprogramming kit (shift kit)

If indeed you have the early E4OD, you might just want to find one that is worth rebuilding. The early ones were not that reliable. I have a 95 and my understanding, that is about the time they figured out all the issues. I think the '96's were built like they should have.

I heard the early versions have different electronics then with the later versions but will look into that.

Probably, but I do not think that is really a problem. Most everything can be updated. One thing for certain, what little I know, the early ones had so many updates, if you want to do it right, why not start with a transmission that has all the updates [or at least most of them].

One thing I've noticed from tuning E4OD's is that the programming within the ECU is generally very lazy. For the most part, the transmission is going to behave exactly like the ECU tells it too. Upgrading the converter, and/or the valve body accumulator will be a plus and make a difference, but aftermarket tuning for the transmission will also help to dial it in, for all driving conditions. This is given that the transmission is in good working order because you simply can't tune around a worn out/bad transmission.

X2. Don't even mess with the '89 when it goes. Find any other year to reman, other than the first year.
