Tried using a 5.8 filter on my 351w but it was too big, ended up putting on a 5.0 filter and it fit. Was this just on certain blocks? Just wondering the reason why. Previous owner did rebuild the engine so maybe they put an adapter in there for some reason? Just curious
Does your 351 have the oil cooler on it? My '94 does and it still takes the 351 filter. It is a good thing my '94 had a Ford Motorcraft oil filter on it when I got it or I would have thought it took the old standard FL-1A Motorcraft filter.
I understand from what I read on here that the threads are different on the FL-1A filter and the filter MY 351 takes, I can't think of that number right now it must be the wrong time of the day.
As already stated:
FL1A = no oil cooler (same as 5.0)
FL820S= OEM oil cooler
I think 94 model year was first OEM oil cooler mounted to oil filter location on 5.8
I took my oil cooler off because I was concerned with the high cost of the special lower radiator hose and my concern of the potential of a higher mileage oil cooler leaking oil into the coolant system.
The Fl 820 and the Fl-1A have different threads
You need a FL-300 if you want a shorter FL-1A for the oil cooler applications
The 820's came out later for the modular motors and have metric threads
Not a Ford filter but a Mercedes filter that was in for an early oil service. Not what I would call ideal and certainly not what I would recommend to my clients.
