I just did an oil change.
I have to hop in my other truck and go get a new filter before I can finish.
I bought a Wix 51372XP, made by Mann+Hummel.
It has small metal chips in the inlet holes. I realize these would just get caught in the filter media, but if the bypass valve opens you may have an issue.
those that complained about the "orange filter of death" say use wix...good catch...why take the chance. Quality control went to the way side, when the all mighty re-todd CEO's wants every penny!
I have been using nothing but Motorcraft FL1A filters on my SBFs for years. Never any issues with bad thread, or debris in the filter. The things are CHEAP. No reason to run any other brand.
I have almost always run Motorcraft Fl1A exclusively for the last 25 years on my Fords. A few times I did use a Purolator or a Wix. Anyway, a few years ago I decided to try the Wix 51515 and 51515XP filter and my truck had engine noises at cold startup with 2 different filters after returning the first. I looked it up and found that either the Land Rover or Range Rover guys had trouble with this filter which caused engine damage. Won't be buying another one. I would just run the Motorcraft filter.
I ended up going with the Motorcraft. Fantastic quality, highly recommend it! (Duh, it's O.E.!)
_________
A little backround with my filter experience:
I've got a Mazda RX-7 and a '92 ZR-1 'vette at home. Years ago I did a filter dissection on the Rotary. Took apart some 5 or so filters. After seeing what's inside, I will never buy a Fram again.
The Wix was O.E. quality, but my favorite was the factory Mazda Filter. As time wore on, my local Mazda dealer relocated out of my county. Now I'm painted into a corner; gotta either make a special trip and buy them in bulk, or pay out the nose for the convenience and take a gamble on the wix.
Similar story on the 'vette, except delco doesn't want to make the filter anymore because GM is trying to sweep that mercruiser/lotus engine under the rug. No telling who the delco filters are made by this month. Parts are getting scarce for the LT5 but damn what a mill.
