What is this? Skid plate?

Hello All,

Might be a dumb question but I'm looking for some insight into what this part is under the front end of my truck. I'm tracking down some leaks and want to change out my oil pressure sending unit and its making that very difficult. Is this just simply a skid plate? Is it a component of the lift kit (4" rough country kit installed)? Any concerns with removing it for repairs? Thanks

If plastic probably more of a mud and rock guard. Regardless take it off and do your repair.

Sway bar mount. I'd rather pull the inner fender to get to the oil pressure sending unit.

If you do pull it off (4 bolts, quick), be sure to reinstall. Sounds crazy but it adds strength to the frame rail where the steering box puts a lot of stress by tying both frame rails together. Seems like most cracked frames lack that mount.

My 95 standard cab 150 has that as well. The front sway bar inner bushings mount to it. Does your truck have the towing package? Or the dual front shocks?

I added this skid to my 93, which didn't have one but came with no anti-sway bars for the sole purpose of stiffening up the frame rails just as @GoinBoarding mentioned

I just wouldn't fool with it, since it still is hung by the sway bar links & I don't think that frees up any useful room.

Could be wrong cause I haven't done a 4X.

I might even try loosening the acc bracket to give a ratchet room.

Whatever you do, buy/rent the right socket & avoid aggravation.

Its not that hard to change the oil pressure sending unit from the top. Just remove the air cleaner tube. Put and old something padded on the radiator support like a moving blanket to lean on and reach down and change it.

The oil switch type sender takes a special socket, although I did find a socket that fit it good enough to remove it. Think a 1 1/16 socket will sorta fit.

While you're at it you can get the earlier "real" sending unit and extension mount and then solder a jumper wire on the back of the gauge to make it functional.

And why do you feel you need to change out your oil pressure SWITCH, it is not a sending unit.

Thanks for the clarification... because its a cheap part to replace and my gauge is not working as it should. Just covering my bases

I'll check again if its accessible from the top. When I originally checked a few months ago I couldn't even see it from the engine bay. I did buy the special socket to remove it.

Plan was to remove it entirely from the sway bar links to do my repairs and check leaks.
