As mentioned in my other thread the flywheel is damaged. This new starter also just dosent sound right to me. Even the old starter with the solenoid hanging off sounded smother while I was cranking 20 seconds at a time. Unfortunately with my history I’ve had to replace the starter more than most. Even the advance auto brand sounded smoother. Currently going to try and get this one swapped out just in case. They fly wheel replacement appears to be a beefy task. I’m ready to buy a new one today and think I can do the job. What I know i don’t know is anything to look for that could be a larger problem. Would be terrible going through the work getting a new fly wheel and not fixing the main problem. At the same time maybe the flywheel is the main problem.
You say, "flywheel" so I assume manual transmission.
Make sure it comes with (or be sure to buy) a NEW pilot bearing and new throwout (clutch release) bearing AND clutch fork. No sense tearing it apart again for those failures 20 miles down the road!
Buy a new flexplate and hit up a hardware store for six 3/8-24 flanged locknuts for the torque converter. Otherwise a dab of blue loctite on the flexplate bolts is it.
Sorry, I saw the teeth....but I didn't see the "depth" of the flexplate...it looked like a flat flywheel initially (the flywheel has a chamfer in the same spot)....then I noticed the open bottom of the bellhousing and the bolt hole for the lower cover by the upper starter bolt. My bad.
Bought a ford reman 115 k ago maybe someday I’ll buy one. The best I have to slide back the transmission is a pallet Jack I can put some cribbing on. Do y’all think that would work? Of course I want to keep the transfer case and transmission connected. Think it would less work that way but can’t say since I haven’t done it before.
Separate the trans and transfer case. You do not even have to move the transfer case out from under the truck. I rolled mine towards the back and hung it there with two ratchet straps. It is not that heavy, by itself.
You might have to shorten the handle on the pallet jack or remove it and use a short piece of pipe.
I think you can make it work on a piece of plywood that allows it to roll.
Depending how high your truck is blocked up, you may just have to man handle the trans out from under the truck.
