I have a 2004 F-150 5.4L XLT. I seem to be geting a grinding sound when first starting the engine. It was happening every once in a while but now seems to be getting worse. I know I can replace the starter fairly easily but I don't want to realy get into replacing the flywheel. If I start by just replacing the starter will I wind up doing it again if the flywheel is bad? Also, is there a way to check the flywheel without terring everything apart? Thanks for the help.
Welcome to our world!
I have doubts that the flywheel is damaged at this point, but its gonna depend on how long the grinding has been going on. I suggest you replace the starter, and NOT get a reman. If finances dictate that you get a reman, dont get one from Autozone,Get one from a reputable parts store such as NAPA.
If youre concerned about the flywheel, take a look at the teeth on it whilst changing the Starter....again...welcome to the forum!
I've had the same problem for a while. I waited too long. purchased a new starter. It worked for a few weeks. Started happening again until it wouldn't grab anymore. Needed a new flywheel after that. Get the actual ford one if you have to btw.
I got it done over the holiday weekend. It took about an hour for the two easy bolts and about two for the one on the top. I did see some wear on the very front of the flywheel. I put in the new starter though and it starts like a dream. I will just need to keep an eye in it to see if the flywheel holds up. Thanks for the help.
