Transmission started shifting a bit rough while towing a small 28 ft fifth wheel camper, climbed a hill then overheated. I pulled over and waited for it to cool off, it climbed one more hill and decided to have all neutrals other than park.
. I had it towed the rest of the way to the gas station ($220 for 1/3 mile). No transmission fluid. Added some of the crap the gas station has and realized the fluid was rapidly dripping straight back out of the gasket for the transmission fluid pan and the fluid coming out was black. It looked like the gasket actually blew out. I know it's going to be expensive, any idea how expensive? What would cause the gasket to blow?
You never said what truck & tranny. Around $2500 (low side) justfor a rebuilt unit. Then add shipping (freight). Then labor if you are not installing it. Search Jasper for prices.
It's going to get towed a transmission shop to find out what blew up but they're backed up nearly 3 weeks on repairs, he's pretty sure something major is burned up inside
He's probably correct. It would have been salvageable if for some stroke of crazy luck it was gradual and you caught it because it was marking your driveway. But, it ran dry, at speed, under a load.
Everything in a tranny relies in the fluid.
Use the tow truck to take the camper everywhere. Cut out the middleman...
tow truck company just used a standard 5th wheel pickup to bring me the camper
The dashboard that didn't alert me of the problem until about 10 minutes too late...the refurbished dash I ordered from circuitboardmedics last week just showed up
The guy that runs the transmission shop says I'm welcome to come swap it out before he starts work on the truck

you didn’t check the fluid after it overheated the transmission the first time???

Yep that's a $4000 lesson. All I can say is next time I'll put in earplugs instead of listening to the whining, crying and threats from the "passenger" We wound up just as broke down and it took just as long to get home as if I had just left it in park and listened to the screaming and cussing - I edited to remove her exact words, no one else needs to be subjected to that kind of verbal abuse.
