Ok my truck is the Extended cab short bed which never rolled out of the factory with 4WD so I'm putting one in. My question is I know there is a spot on my instrument cluster for a 4x4 light. This leads me to believe that the transfer case is going to have at least one electrical connector on it if nothing else but for the light what other connectors might there be and are any of them necessary. Because I know since my truck never had four wheel drive as an option it's not going to have the connectors for a transfer case and if the 4x4 light is the only connector I can live without it I believe that there's no sense in messing up wiring if I don't have to but if I'm going to have to wire a bunch of connectors in I would like to know ahead of time before I start tearing and everything so I can do the proper research on it
I'll probably be tearing into the dash of my 86 F150 4x4 this coming weekend, so I'll try to remember to get some pictures if no one else has gotten your what you need by then. I need to check my transfer case, so I'll try to look for wiring on it while I'm there. Just trying to get my 86 on the road after buying it as a project last year. So far one just yard driven it.
Thanks I'd appreciate it I'd like to say there isn't a lot of connectors considering my two wheel drive aod transmission only had the speedometer and the park neutral safety switch but I suppose there's quite a jump from a two-wheel drive aod to a four-wheel drive system and also good luck with your truck I can't say much about the four-wheel drives cuz mine doesn't have it yet but if it's anything like this old two-wheel drive you'll love it
You could just run a harness for this once you know how the transfer switch works.
Is it the ground or make / break switch.
Ground would be easy. Fused power to light> light to switch> switch to ground.
M / B: Fused power to switch> switch to bulb> bulb to ground.
I cant remember if my 86 K5 had a 4x4 light or not but I am pretty sure the 66 Bronco & 73 Toyota LC did not have lights.
Heck I am sure my 02 Durango has a 4x4 light but in the last 8 years I have been in NC I have not had it in 4x4.
It is not like you are in 4x4 for days or weeks at a time and would forget you were in 4x4 so why have a light?
There is only 1 time I remember being in 4x4 high for a long time and that was driving from Long Inland NY to Conn in a snow storm xmass night to get home. LIE & I95 were not plowed because of the holiday.

Like you suspect, not much of anything for the 4x4 except the light. You might need a longer speedo cable, since it will go into the transfer case which is farther back, the 4x4 transmission won't have a spot for the speedo cable. I have forgotten what you are doing about the transmission, but if you convert to a manual transmission, you have a little more wiring and work to do.
