Good Day,While driving to work my trans.just stopped pulling.I have tried changing screen in trans.,no luck.Is there anything else I should check before looking for another trans. Also can I use trans. From a ford ranger, bronco is 1988,4ALD overdrive trans.Would be thankful for any advice.
You should be good wih any A4LD tranny from that year, I believe the areostar had them too. I think there were some changes in 1989. Can anyone else confirm this.
Take a look at the electrical connections to be sure but I agree with Ken00 you should be able to swap your tranny with a tranny from an 88 ranger . You may also be able to swap with an 87 ranger, the 87 bronco 2 will not swap with yours though, I'm certain.
You will not be able to swap with an 87 or below A4LD due to the fact the 88 has dual solenoid setup. The 87 and below does not have the dual solenoids. The 89 will swap in but you will have to modify the shift linkage. The 89 and 90 has the linkage for the column shifter and the 88 has floor shifter. You will have to get an external shift control arm from an 88 and swap it over to the 89. Sounds difficult but it's quite easy. Did my swap 89 A4LD into 88 Bronco II last winter. It can be quite a learning experience doing this for the first time (in the snow).
BII A4LD has beefier parts than an Aerostar trany which can be fragile if not well taken care of. In other words, be cautious of an Aerostar donor trany if you are going to work it hard.
I havenot taken old trans.out yet,I am going to change modulator on it first, wondering if this may be why it stopped working. What do you gentleman think.
The modulator will not stop the transmission from engaging in gear. It may cause a transmission to fail if it is allowing it to slip for an extended period of time. The modulator controls the internal hydraulic pressure depending on engine load (vacuum). A bad modulator usually will cause a transmission to slip or shift hard, depending on the failure mode.

So you guys are saing that a 87 A4LD trans will not work in a 89 or did misunderstand your post??
(Gray Ranger)
The Ranger truck tranny's might be inetrchangeable but the tranny used in the 87 bronco 2 is not the same . My 87 bronco2 tranny is listed as a 87 only same thing with the ECM .
What do I need to look for to see if I can put the tranie in my 87 Ranger 4x4 to see if it will work in my 89 BII 4x4?I know that the shift lickage it diffrent, but what else is?
