Engine Block Heater

Regarding a 2001 F-250 7.3 powerstroke. When I plug the block heater and wait 4-5 hours I do not feel even a slight temp. difference on the block. Is the heat mainly internal and perhaps does not radiate out, or is there a electrical problem. I just had a idea, in the morning I will feel the oil on the dipstick to ensure it is warm. Any other suggestions are appreciated. I know it does not get very cold down here but it did drop to 35 or so Thursday and Friday nights.

A guy I work with that has a powerstroke says the snow melts on his hood when it's plugged in. I would take a multimeter, put it on rx1 scale, and read between the prongs. You should get some type of resistance reading of the heating element. If you don't then it's burnt open, or the wire feeding it is bad.

Thanks Frank,

I checked the oil on the dipstick and it was not warm at all. Gonna poke around with the multimeter tomorrow. I also was wondering if there was a switch to turn the heater on. The owners manual does not mention one and there is not any type of switch in the cab for a enging heater. Reckon I'll get it figured out before we head to Missouri for thanksgiving.

I have never heard of a switch, but I wonder if it has some sort of thermostat built into it to regulate the heat.

There's always the possibility that the cord is unplugged at the frost plug. It happens.
