I had one installed last year on my 2001 F250 V10. It was located in the left rear freeze plug. I ended up having my local dealer install it. One I was a little nervous about popping one out myself, and two I was due for a engine flush so figured I would have it all done at once.
It was a great addition to the truck. I also bought a self timer. I programmed it to come on about 3 1/2 hours before I got off work. My truck would warm up in minutes, plus I seen a huge increase in gas mileage, since I didn't have to let my truck idle for 15 minutes or more.
On a side note, I just installed a Hot Wash Wiper Fluid Heater. A guy I work with has one on his truck. I finally decided to do it. It heat up the washer fluid to 90deg. to melt ice and snow. Then in the summer the heated fluid helps to clean off bugs and road grime.
Interesting. I have never considered the advantage of a block heater on a gas engine. Our Winters are milder than yours in Idaho, but in the long run, it would pay for itself in reduced fuel and reduced wear.
