PCV on 7.3

Like a lot of 7.3 owners here, I get kinda tired or the oil in the intake system. Replacing the PCV valve in my daughter's Toyota, it occurred to me, "why not put a PCV valve on my 7.3" ? One could put it on top of the "dog house" assembly. Thougths?

I don’t have any experience with PCVs but I rerouted my CCV into a small DIY road draft tube. Keeps the intake clean and gives a little rust preventative to the truck frame lol

A PCV is just a check valve that allows airflow towards the engine.
I don't think it would prevent the oil from doing the same as it already is.
Many people divert the breather tube into a catch can to prevent the oil from entering the intake.

Someone here (Y2K, Sous, etc.) has done some serious research around this issue and the design details of the 7.3 PCV system. Search... search... the information is available to supply lots of food for thought on this issue. If I find it before you do, I'll post a link.

What I was remembering was Y2K's Post (#61) in the thread linked here >> [ https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1610743-ccv-mod.html ].

There are several good threads on the topic.

A PCV system requires engine vacuum to function.

The crankcase vent on the 7.3L requires no vacuum to operate and uses the differential pressure in the pre-turbo intake tract to vent crankcase pressure back into the combustion chamber.

A gasoline PCV system uses intake manifold vacuum to actively suck crankcase vapors into the intake sysem to be burned. Since a diesel has no intake vacuum (and in our case manifold PRESSURE with turbocharging), there is no way an actual PCV system would work.

PCV needs constant vacuum to work
turbo inlet dont do much for that until air filter gets dirty

catch cans over fill and long hose is just another mess to deal with

a couple of moist road salt air runs and your IC and piping is going to get some corrosion on the inside which cant be that good for the engine

Think of the oil mist in the intake as lubrication for the compressor wheel's fins for when they contact the compressor housing.

After many years of dumping crankcase fumes to the street via a vent tube, I reconnected my vent to factory location because I grew tired of smelling the fumes every time I pulled up to a stoplight with the windows down on a nice day. Plus the truck always had "smoke" coming out from under the chassis from the vent pipe. Just wanted to clean things up.

It also works as a fantastic lapping compound for intake valves when there's no air filter (or K&N).

Have always wondered if the soot laden mist itself abrades the intake valves as well? But yeah seems like poor filtration is mostly responsible

If you ever wonder how sunk a 7.3L valve can be in its seat and still run just fine......

All of the intakes were pretty equally shot.
