Crank no start, died when bumped
Crank no start, died when bumped
I have a 2000 7.3. Truck was running great then went to start it and it would just crank. I noticed my glow plug indicator and my hydra tuner was not on but all other lights were on. I push the shifter higher up into park and they came on and the truck started but when I shut my door it shut off, got it going again then it shut off going down the road, in the process I broke my shift tube. But the truck wouldn’t start in neutral I don’t know if I just couldn’t find it or not but it would only start jammed all the way into park. Does anyone know what this could be maybe a neutral safety switch. Just try to find a quick cheap fix as I’m zf6 swapping the truck soon.
I'm thinking a new shift tube is a good start to getting it back on the road.
Definitely related to neutral safety switch. No way you should try defeating that. Just fix what's broke.

Neutral safety switch shouldn’t cause it to quit once running.
Loose Hydra chip? Be careful if so, that’s a recipe for a fried PCM & chip.
How about fuel bowl heater (PCM) fuse?
Ignition switch? Or whatever you call the electrical part of it.

The neutral switch doesn't have any effect on the PCM or WTS, it just inhibits crank.
+1 on checking the PCM fuse. Fuse #30 under the dash. If it's blown disconnect the fuel bowl heater and replace the fuse.

I have to go back over to truck, the hydra doesn’t seem to be loose in the pcm. I don’t believe it to be a fuse but I will of course check but I don’t believe it to be a blown fuse because I got the truck to run and shut off when jolted. Like I stated before the truck would not start in neutral but it would start on park but the truck acks like it is not all the way in park because it would only crank until the shifter was pushed up as far as it would go.
Neutral switch will prevent starting. It sounds like you’re column has issues. Have you checked the 2 bolts up under the dash? That jacks with the shifter.
It sounds like you have 2 different issues. The switch will only prevent starting, it won’t shut down your truck.
I may have said “loose” regarding the chip. What I meant was poor connection, one that can be disconnected briefly.
Same with the fuse. You don’t have to have a blown fuse to cause the issue. Something jarring loose and disconnecting.

So I checked the fuse and my hydra they seemed fine, and I replaced the shift tube and the truck seems fine now 🤞🏻. I tried to hit bumps and jar it around to see if something was loose. Only down side is for some reason my key cylinder won’t go back in so I had to remove the switch on the bottom of the column and get it going that way.
