Steering shaft stuck?

Planning to replace the worn rag joint in my steering shaft. When I loosen it from both ends it should collapse right? Or do I have to loosen the steering column? It's an auto with tilt and I don't see where the column would loosen. Been hitting what looks like the area that should collapse on itself with oil but won't budge so far.

Bolt in blue box loose, then removed. Red box part "should" slide into the outer shaft. Slide the rubber boot up and spray some WD or PB blaster in there. Called a collapsible steering shaft for driver protection in a head on to help keep the steering column from chest punching you. See if you can remove/separate the flex joint and the flex joint mount plate on the other end and get some prying from that end.

Ok thanks. That's what I'm doing but I wanted to make sure I wasn't doing it wrong. I'll keep spraying and prying. If I can't get a 1/4" of movement I should be able to get it out.

Worse case loosen the steering column (2 bolts, under the cover), in the cab and slide it out a bit.

Still stuck?

Did you get your collapsible steering shaft un-stuck? Mine is very stuck as I got in there to replace the gearbox & tie rods below.

Any tips for getting it unstuck besides WD & heat and pulling with my hands?

If I recall I ended up just loosening the steering column from inside the truck to get it out. Was pretty easy.

Gotcha. My shaft is already out & stuck in a shortened position. I need to extend it before I can reseat it in the steering column & gearbox splines

I'm sure y'all know ... but someday someone might not know .... that the rag joint clamp bolt on the steering box input splined end is in a round groove like in the splines, so that even if it goes loose, the rag joint stays connected at the steering box end. If the bolt is removed, then it can be taken off the input shaft splines .....

I would put the outer tube (at the rag joint end) in a vice, pry up the rubber boot, spray is with WD or BP in the slippage area. And then give it (the outer shaft) a few push/pulls to get it unstuck. Those push/pulls might be with a tie rod pickle fork slid over the inner shaft at the other end (where the large u-joint fitting it) and a 2.5lb sledge.

Or again rag joint end, in a vice (all lubed up) and a cable come along on the other end (small part) and to an anchor point then with it under tension, tap on the shafts. Even use a air chisel with a flat/blunt bit on both shaft parts to help vibrate it to loosen up.
