I have an 08 f250 and have a black maxx programmer question. The truck was bought with it programmed to performance. The motor had a blown piston and was taken to the shop for a full short block rebuild. While at the shop, they flashed the ecm and put on their own program on it. I have ordered all the cables to re hook up the tuner. Is there any way to recover the lost programming, or can I use the tuner just for monitoring?
The tune was erased when they flashed it. The programmer is Vin locked to this truck, so was wondering if I could use the programmer even tho the stock program from the truck has been erased.
I understand they flashed your truck, but you still have the tuner. Flashing the truck should not erase anything from the tuner. From their descriptions of the tuner:
The H&S Black Maxx for Diesel Trucks comes with preloaded tunes for both DPF present and DPF removed trucks. The H&S Black Maxx tuner for Diesel Trucks is capable of removing the DPF and ALL related sensors if desired.
You can check online for updates, new features & free custom tunes!
So you should have something or you can download something, if that service still exists. Even of not, it should still work to monitor your truck.
I am not really sure how the tuners work. If they lock up if the previous program is not returned to the tuner. The cables were not available to take the tune off and return to stock before they flashed it and put their own program on it. So is the tuner going to store the program that they have installed as the stock location?
Per the little that I read, and hopefully, someone that knows the BM tuner can step in, the tuner has all that it needs built in. My SCT tuner gets the tunes downloaded into the tuner, then it plugs into the vehicle, copies the factory tune, and "copies" or "programs" the ECM with the code that is in the tuner. That data or tune remains in the tuner as well as in the truck.
Again, I do not know the BM tuner so I have no idea how to check what is in it, or how it really works.
Ok, so I just googled how to use the BM tuner, and found this. I think this will answer all your questions.
Thank you for all the guidance. I will update when I get the communication cables in. I just dont want to flash the ecu and the program not load to it since it already has another custom tune on it.
I take no responsibility for what/why the shop tuned your tuck with or what may happen if you change that tune. I would talk to the shop and see if there is anything special about the tune they installed and if using the BM tuner will have any ill effects.
