Oil pressure

So I’ve been running my f150 with a 302, it’s oil pressure gauge went from the middle or around the N on the normal to the far left of the normal area. I hear that gauge is pointless and is a dummy gauge from some sites? Should I be concerned?

Yes, you need to figure out if it really is the switch or not. It is a dummy gauge, I think once there’s about 3psi it is supposed to jump to Normal. But you don’t know if you really have pressure and just a bad switch, and no oil is a real problem. Best way to check is a mechanical gauge. You can also try cleaning the contacts on the pressure switch.

Ok, the previous owner had some sort of oil pressure gauge installed, thieves broke it. I’ll replace it and see what it says.

First started high idle

High idle

Idle starts to go down

Low idle

here’s how it goes. I started it after I got spark back it was fine. Shut it off and came back to finish the cooling system job I was doing, and ran it for an hour it was fine. Then a day or two later I ran it it was fine and about an hour in the oil pressure did this.

The oil pressure switch is behind the intake manifold, on the back of the engine. If you wiggle the harness back there, the gauge will probably go up(or down). Take a photo of you oil pressure switch for us.

I was looking it up to see what it looked like so I don’t miss it, and this is where they say the sensor is. Is there a difference between a switch and a sensor? Or is it the same? Just so I know to look for it in both places if it’s the same.

You're looking in the right place for a 5.0 engine. In 1987, Ford changed the sending unit to a switch and added a resistor to the electrical circuit going to the gauge. The gauge will show pressure as long as there is around 6 or 7 PSI in the system. Before the changes were made, dealerships were getting a lot of customer complaints concerning oil pressure. In reality, the gauge is acting the same as a light. The variance in pressure the gauge is showing is most likely an electrical issue, not an oil pressure issue.

Yes, that's it. I sent you looking in the wrong spot.

Not trying to hijack the thread here... but could that sensor be removed and that port used to hook up a true mechanical gauge??

sure. what you would need to do is put a "T" in the line so you have the true gauge, and the idiot light gauge.
there is directions on how to make the in dash gauge read real pressure instead of on/off somewhere here on FTE.

So whatever the guy did to my truck when he had it, he took the dummy sensor out, put something in the spot of the sensor. Then copper tubing goes to the dummy sensor and the mechanical gauge.
