help i have a 1977 ltd 2 with oil consumption????

hello I recently about 4 months ago purchased a 1977 ford ltd 2 at the time it used no oil at all I did a tune up and changed the oil and pcv valve. I have notes that someone before I got it did whey with the egr valve. But my question is I drove it for two months before I changed the oil and pcv valve and did the tune up. As that’s when I could afford to do it as I was out of work at the time of buying it. But why now would it start to consume oil. I took it in to SHOP AND THEY SED THAT THERE IS NO LEAKS!! Help i am at a lose with this one. Could it be the generic pcv valve I have on it? I have no test that it’s set up kind weird it has a tube going into the carb instead of a hose? Is that the problem? My pcv valve. The car has allot of miles on it 165 thousand to be exact. But like I seed it didn’t use oil till I did these things. I have maxlife high mileage in it. No smoke and no signs of oil out the exast pipe. And very small amounts of blow buy. But not that much. So will a generic pcv valve cause this it’s a ford 400 v8? I am using 10/40 in it should I go to 20/50 it gets pretty cold in Spokane WA in the winter. Any help would be helpful. i go through about a quart of oil within 2 weeks somtimes in a week.

You never said how much oil you were going through. Some consumption, especially in an older engine with high mileage, is inevitable. I doubt it's the PCV valve.

I would not go to a heavier oil.

Yeah - I guess that would worry me too...

You haven't noticed anything else as far as how it runs, or odors or anything else unusual? How does the anti-freeze look?

Unfortunately, if it's not leaking (that would be my first suspicion), then it's probably blowing by. I'd start by checking compression and go from there.

re purrs like a kitten

Hi there like it says in my title purrs like a kitten and it dose. Has all the power in world one would think it has been rebuilt. But shows no signs of it. It takes of in a dime and cruses down the road just great. No nocks just sometimes funny noises up a hill kind of like a ping or a spark nock. But that’s the only time it dose that. No funny smell or fowl odor. And the color in the anti freeze looks green. No off color there. I will take it in for a compression test this next week. And see what that shows.

yeah a compression test should tell you a lot. You may have a seal that was brittle and it just coincidentally let lo and now you are burning oil. Or when you changed oil perhaps the previous owner had some STP or somewthing in it or maybe the new oil cleaned out any gunk that was preventing leaks or blowby.

Do the test and if the test doesn't show a problem, then I would suspect a bad PCV or a leak somewhere.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

Try using Valvoline Max Life for a change or two. It is said to revitalize seals and such. Just a suggestion.
