And, what truck are you asking about (we ain't psychic).
I think it was STP multi vehicle ATF. The front sticker was rubbed off. On the back I saw not for use in Merc V vehicles. Im thinking I put about a 1/2 to 3/4 of a quart in my 2003 V10 f250.
If that identification is correct, it is recommended by its manufacturer for use in transmissions that used Mercon which is what your transmission left the factory filled with. The recommendation by Ford to use Mercon V in your transmission was made several years after your truck was built when Ford discontinued the licensing of the original Mercon. STP multi vehicle ATF is not suitable for use in transmissions that were designed to use Mercon V which does not include yours.

I wouldn't worry about it a bit.
I actually didn't know this. So, you could use old school Dex/Merc?
Well, that is what they left the factory filled with. Mercon V, IIRC, has better properties that give it an advantage so use that if possible. I wouldn't intentionally choose an older formulation since there's something "better" available.

You can use whatever you want, it's your truck.
*I* wouldn't use DEX/MERC for anything. What spec does it meet? Answer: None. It is whatever the manufacturer wants to put in the bottle. Does it actually meet the discontinued MERCON spec? Nobody knows.
