I have a 1999 Superduty, 5.4, 4WD. About a week ago I had a spark plug blow out of the head while on my way to work. Fortunately I was in a parking lot and immediately shut it off. I found a local shop who said they could fix the issue, so I had it towed there, where it remained for 5 days. They finally called and said that it was ready, but when I picked it up, it was still misfiring, The shop wanted me drive it and wait for a check engine light so the scanner would identify the misfire. My guess was that it was related to their repair, since it ran fine before. They gave me a hassle and I got my money back and limped the truck home. Long story short.
Today, I pulled that plug and inspected it, put a new coil pack on that cylinder and made sure everything was snug, but I still have a misfire......
Did my shop damage something installing the insert? Can the insert be removed? Valve damage????
TIA for any input. I gotta be back at work thursday so I need to solve this issue quickly.

Regulator68: Which spark plug blew out? I have a 2002 F-250 5.4L 2V CCLB 4WD (227,000) and my driver side #7 (one from the rear) blew out about 2-3 years ago. I only realized that some garage put in the "Auto Store" insert. So I bought the same not realizing the proven track record of CAL-Van inserts. Nor did I think I could do it. So at the time I re-installed a new "Auto Store" insert and it lasted about 2 years. Blew out again but caught it before it did any damage. I researched the Cal-Van method, ordered it ($230 for a set of 8 inserts) and did it. So far so go. I do have a check engine light only because the COP connector lost the clip. The fix is to zip tie to the fuel rail or get a donor connector. I went to LKQ and snipped off a couple to fix it. You can re-tapped the hole using the proven Cal-Van insert method.

Reason: clarity
Took the truck to a second shop and they quickly identified a second misfire due to coil pack failure. The first shop refused to even look further. I am back on the road and will see how the insert holds up. Thanks for the input!
