1981 F100 L6 Electrical Problems

This is my first project truck and I got it running but I noticed the starter solenoid was smoking so I took the negative cable off the truck to stop it and it sparked and I wasn’t able to put it back without it sparking a lot. I replaced the battery cables, start, solenoid and voltage regulator. I was wondering if getting a new alternator and voltage regulator connector would solve my issue.

What is your problem? Sparking when putting the battery cable on is not necessarily a problem, unless the battery keeps going down.

It’s a big enough spark enough if you just touch the negative cable to the post it’ll weld itself and you have to pull it off with more force

So you have a large amp draw somewhere.

The key is not on?

The headlights are not on?

You didn't say it was trying to start?

You could put a testlight between the battery negative and the battery negative terminal for testing. Put the negative terminal on a rag, and poke it with a testlight. Take the alligator clip end of the testlight and clip it to the battery negative. If the testlight lights up bright, you do have an excessive draw. So then you can go around disconnecting things till you find what makes the light go out. Make sure you have a older style testlight with the conventional bulb, not one of those fancy LED testlights.

You can pull the fuses one at a time, pull any wires off the battery for added electrical stuff, and one thing you can pull wires off is the alternator. Do this one at a time till the light goes out. When it does, that is the culprit.

P.S. Make sure you close the door when doing the tests. The domelight will be a draw and make the testlight come on, fouling the test.

Did you replace all those parts before or after the smoking relay problem? Unless you’ve got a money tree in your backyard, I’d suggest figuring out the root cause before throwing any more parts at the truck.

Aftermarket starter relays have a VERY high failure rate. Maybe start by installing a top quality name brand relay and go from there:
