I have a short in my 79 bronco,it keeps on draining my battery. I just bought a new battery and with in three days "dead "to a point of needing a jump. I noticed that when it did'nt have enough juice to crank it over the lights seemed to be bright as ever.
Thats not a bad battery... thats a bad connection to the starter or the start solenoid. It may not even be the connections. Its possible that its the cable itself. Check resistance with the positve batter cable disconnected between the battery terminal and the start solenoid and again between the solenoid and the starter with the cable disconnected from the starter. If the resistance is greater than about 1-1.5 ohms, you have cable problems. Make certain that there is not major resistance across the two large posts of the start solenoid when the solenoid is engaged. Best way to check is to remove the positive cable from the battery and the starter and measure the resistance across the two large postswhen the key is turned to the "start" position. Unless you are getting a charge indicator light on the dashboard while the truck is running, the problem is somewhere in this area. If you are getting a charge indicator on the dash, the alternator, voltage regulator, and connections to them are suspect.
ok i checked that out and all the cables read 1.4, so i asume they are ok. I did change the alternator regulator and the truck starts fine, so if it is all good in a couple of days I will let you know. Thanks for the advise, I learn more every day. GOOD TRUCKIN
Well i have'nt had any problems since i changed the alternator regulator so thanks for the help and I hope this info might help any-one with a similar problem.
