Delay going into 1st E40D

1994 F150 5.0 E40D automatic 4x4 127k miles

Hello,

Was driving today and I had to slam on the brakes rather quick to avoid going through the traffic light. When I came to a complete stop, the truck had elevated rpms for about 10 seconds and then finally dropped into 1st gear. This is the first time this has happened and doesn’t happen when coming to w normal stop.

PCM is a rebuilt that ive had for a month now, PSOM i suspect needs a rebuild, my needle is slightly erractic.

No troubleshooting codes present.
Trans filter and fluid is new.
All forward gears shift smooth up and down

Any ideas?

Low trans fluid could do this. If it is a 4x4 you may have a 4x2 filter in there, which would allow the pump to suck air in extreme stops.

When Cold the fluid level on the dipstick for the transmission is about half inch past the last mark.

How is this dipstick read? Little confusing

You need to check the level with the engine running, In park.

If you read the fluid level with the trans cold and the engine off, all that you can determine is that there is fluid in there. You could be a gallon overfilled, or even a gallon low. There is no way to tell.

The trans fluid MUST be read with the trans warmed up, engine idling, and the shifter in park.
