I read the other threads on the E4OD and they don't have the same prob as me. I just got a 92 F-150, 4wd, 302/E4OD, ext cab, long bed. The trans was rebuilt about 2 yrs ago and about 1 year ago the previous owner got the truck stuck, that's when the auto hubs went out and the trans prob started.
The OD off light does not work and I don't think the od is working. The trans will not shift automatically thru the gears. I can shift thru 1st to 2nd to drive and it's fine in each gear but if I just put it in drive sometimes it tries to start out in 3rd gear. Sometimes it will shift automatically but when it gets to 3rd gear it slips back and forth between 2nd and 3rd like it can't make up it's mind which one to be in. So far all I've I've checked is the wiring on the outside of the trans(hoping he just pulled something loose when it got stuck) but everything "seems" to be in order there. No check eng light but I'll see if there are any stored codes tomorrow.
Does this prob ring any bells to anybody. I'm kinda ruling out rebuild because it was done pretty recently and it drives fine when shifting the gears manually. Any help is greatly appreciated.
first don't rule out the rebuild - that term can be confused with remanufactured . difference being rebuild can mean flushing the fluid and changing the filter ( not kidding) the other thing is it sounds as though the previous owner probably tried to get him self out of mud a little to hard and probably overheated the clutch bands and or the the valve body/pump. unless your familiar with the internals of an auto trans. i'd take to trans shop and not just any old garage , trans shops are more reliable and you won't get overcharged because of a lack of experience. depending on what they say you could go with a wrecker unit i've generally had good experiences this way.
Well I have one of those E40D"s in my 90 F250 and it did all kinds of weird things when I first bought it. Slipped into gears if I had my foot in it. Anyway, I put a new motor in and this tranny starting acting like new. The computer controlled tranny's get signals from your throttle position sensor, and a couple others I can't remember due to too many beers but I think the mlps sensor could be a culprit. Check your codes before you spend any money.
I would get under the truck and check all the electrical connectors on the transmission and make sure they are all plugged in and not all corroded up. On a side note when my trans was on its way out it would do weird things too, disconnecting the battery for a while to reset the computer always helped me squeeze a few more miles out of it because it would start shifting normally again, I would pull the codes from the computer before reseting the computer though. If the trans is acting up it will store a check engine code in the computer and usually start blinking the OD on/off light.
