I bought my 88 f-150 back in September, and it had no bulb in the dome light or the cargo light. i put a bulb into the cargo light, and it stayed on even when everything was closed. The light bulb under the hood is also removed. I was told it was a switch, but what switch is it? I’m assuming that the hood and dome light are related to the cargo light.
The hood light has its own switch attached the the hood. I've never seen one that works.
The dome light and cargo light are all connected to the door jam switches. You can force the dome and cargo light on (with the doors closed) by rotating the headlight **** clockwise til it clicks.

I thought it was counterclockwise. Anyway if the cargo light and/or dome lights stay on with the light switch not having them on and the doors closed many times one of the door switches is broken off too short and pushing back far enough and not cancelling the lights.
So I rotated the switch clockwise and it went out of the position it clicks in. I rotated it counterclockwise until it clicked again. Was it on or off? I currently have a tarp over the truck due to some bad weather coming this weekend and a leak so I can’t get to the cargo light to test

Counterclockwise til it clicks and stops, should turn on your dome, and cargo light. Clockwise past the click dims your instrument and dash cluster lights. The more clockwise, the dimmer the lights.
I bought a '92 F250 2 weeks ago, in a similar situation... dome light missing its bulb, and a disconnected door jamb switch. It's next on my list... Handy timing.
Does anyone here know where I could find a wiring diagram for these lights? I'd like to bypass the door switch (mine's missing anyways), and just replace the dome light with one that only has a switch. It seems this is a common problem for this era truck, and I don't mind the risk of killing a battery out of my own ignorance, leaving the light on.
I don’t maybe a repair manual for your truck. I would create a new thread for it maybe it’ll get a response faster since it’ll be at the top of the list with no replies.

FYI, I just replaced my under hood light with this one:
Looking at RockAuto looks like I got the last MotorCraft switch they had. From the sounds of it I am not sure you need to replace the door jamb switch to make the dome work but including it here in case its helpful. HTH.
