I just installed a factory Ford OEM cargo light from a 1979 to my 1979 F150.
The owners manuel says that when the cargo light is on (switch inside cab above seat belt is on) the cargo light and dome light will be on together, even when the doors are closed. This is suppose to let one know the cargo light is on, because the dome light is on also.
After installing this cargo light thats not how mine is working. When i turn the switch on the cargo light does come on if the door is open, when i close the door the cargo light goes off, as weel as the dome light.
Those of you who have cargo light, please describe how your light operates when door is closed and open and the switch is on.
I've got cargo lights on both my '76 and '78. When you turn on the cargo light switch, the cargo light and dome light both come on reguardless of whether the doors are open or not. With the switch turned off, the cargo light does not come on at all, reguardless of the dome light.
On my 1973 the switch turns on the bed light, but nothing inside the cab. Makes no difference if the door is open or closed. Switch on bed light on. Switch off, bed light off.
oem78, was that a factory light, switch and wiring harness? I have one off of a '76 I am about to install on my truck, so at this point I don't know how it is going to work. However, it does make me curious if there would have been changes in its functionality over the years. I know in later years it was all run off of the headlight switch alone. My thought would be how robertbenita described.
Tees1977f150 guess what when I turn on the headlight switch to turn the dome light on the cargolight and dome light stay on with the doors open and closed?? With out the headlight switch on the cargo lght only workd when the door is open. Did I plug the cargo light into the wrong plug under the dash.
I would like it to work the way the manual says. Anyone with a 1978-79 F150 have pictures of how the cargo light harness plugs in under the dash?
I don't know if this is what you did, but there is a place to hook in a set of left and right under-dash lights. Doesn't sound like you describe, but there are some places that other items might plug into. And some plug in series. I have never done anything with my cargo light, but i will see if it is easy to spot under my dash to help. This would be an excellent time to mention how much I love my 1973 Manuals for my truck. They have a section for strictly electric. You may see them around for not too much and are much better than the typical all in one manual you find in say "Autozone."
Guys, the cargo light wiring harness is a replacement for the standard dome light harness. To retrofit, you take out the dome light harness and plug in the cargo light harness in it's place. If you want to add the under dash courtesy lights, the harness for that has a male and female plug. You unplug the dome light, or dome light/cargo light harness, and plug in the under dash courtesy light harness where the dome light harness plugged into the factory harness, then plug the dome light harness into the under dash harness.
kendooley is right, it replaces the dome light wiring harness and ties them in together in the same harness, and plugs into where your current dome light is plugged into is what I was told, and which makes sense to me.
In order to use the Cargo light on my 1979 F150, I must turn the headlight switch to activate the dome light, then when I turn on the cargo switch above the seat belt cover, the cargo light works when I shut the door, however the dome light stays on when the door is shut, I guess to remind me that my cargo light is on. Again this only
occurs when the headlight switch is activated to turn on the dome light.
My question is were there differnt headlight switches used with the factory installed cargo light set up ? Since I added the cargo light myself does the switch cause this senario? The factory number on the headlight switch is D2AB-11654----A1A.
The 1978 I had work this way: turn on cargo light switch above seat belt cover and cargo light and dome light worked at same time, door closed or open, never had to touch the headlight switch.

The Ford Parts Catalog shows only one light switch for '78-up F100-350. It doesn't show a different switch for trucks w/ cargo light.
Switch, headlamp
D3AZ-11654-A
Fits: '78-up E-F100-350
The number you posted (D2AB-11654-AA) is actually an engineering number. Ford hasn't put part numbers on any parts since 1956.
my 79's cargo light doesnt work, im in the middle of restoring it which means lots of rewiring, and i am just going to run all new wires to my cargo light and dome light which also means to the switches too.
It sounds like you've got switched power from the door jamb switch feeding the cargo light. That being the case, the cargo light will only receive power when the dome light would, i.e. when the headlight switched is turned to the left, or the door is open. To run the cargo light the way you want, you'd need hot-at-all-times from the courtesy lamp circuit (GREEN/YELLOW) to feed the cargo light. Then switched power from the cargo light would also need to run to the dome light (in addition to the door jamb switch and headlight switch) to get the dome light to come on when the cargo light is on. If all you did when you installed the cargo light was splice the switch into the BLACK/BLUE dome light power (which I would put money on), then it has been wired incorrectly.
