A new VCT Problem Question

I've read many of the variable cam timing (VCT) issues which required changing them. Mine were changed at 58,000 miles, still under warranty so it was free. Now at 86,000 miles, the same clicking noise has started again. Has anyone else seen or heard of the VCTs going bad again? I can't believe they are failing after just 30,000 miles, fully half of the original parts lasted.

What oil are you using, and how often do you change it?

Ford's repair warranty is good for 2 years unlimited miles unless it's changed. When was your first repair performed?

Are you using 5w20, 5w30, full or semi synthetic, or conventional?

Spec is semi synthetic. Full is much preferred for turbo engines. Valvolene non synthetic 5w30 does not meet the Ford specification WSS-M2C-946-B1. All oils are not the same, they have different chemistry based on their application.

It’s my opinion, after reading posts on here, and other sites, talking to Ford certified techs and my Dad, who sold Ford trucks for 3 decades, that a great many cam phaser/timing chain failures are due to using the incorrect oil. Old pushrod V8s would tolerate a wide range of oils. Modern overhead cam, direct injected and turbo engines need specific oil.

Which oil filter are you using?

I finally found the invoice and it was done less than 1.2 years ago. They have seen it twice since then; the first for a performance degradation after the VCT changes and the second because the trans was shifting more slowly than before. Both problems fixed by a software adjustment.

The first four years the oil was changed at the dealership. The last year, I've been going to a local oil change place that uses Valvoline products. 5,000 mile changes, never missed.

UPDATE!
Took the 2018 F-150 to the Dealer yesterday that did the original VCT repair. They called me today and said it was the VCT again and it would cost me $2100 to repair. I said why, the repair is warranted for two years. The Service Advisor said since it was repaired the first time at no cost, I would have to pay this time. I said no, I would just pick the truck up tomorrow. It was getting madder and madder and decided to do some research and went to the Ford Pass site where I looked up the warranty information about service repairs. It was as Tseekins said, the warranty is 2 years from the date of installation. I used the chat feature and asked the warranty person at Ford about it, and she said the recall repair was warranted for one year or 12,000 miles. I said no, the VCT was changed as part of the warranty, the recall did not come out until AFTER I had it fixed. She apologized and said yes, the repair is warranted for two years and unlimited miles for a warranty repair.
Tomorrow, I go to battle with the Service Advisor.

After that, I would be wanting to go to a different dealer.
