Can someone tell me once and for all just what the hell it sounds like if your guides are shot? I had the "start-up noise" issue reslolved last month by replacing the Cam tensioner. I have had it to the dealership 3 times now for the latest problem which is a loud engine rattle most noticeable at the 50 kph range. It doesn't change with load and is not really noticeable at idle. They kept the truck for 2 days this time and did the old "Decarbonizing" routine, thinking it was spark knock. Absolutely no improvement and probably even a little worse now. At least they acknowledge that they were unsuccesful and have rebooked an appointment, complete with loaner vehicle, for later this month. What irks me the most is the refusal to acknowledge that it might be the Cam guide. Anybody care to comment I'd welcome it. Mostly thanks for letting me sound off!
According to the Ford documents, it sounds like a "metallic type" sound. Usually heard best at idle, however may be present at all engine speeds. Does not go away after the first few minutes of startup and can be easily heard coming from the front of the engine with the hood up. Has your dealer even read the supporting documents for Owner Notification Program (ONP) 01M01? They describe to your dealer exactly what to listen for and what to do to correct it.
I have the same situation with my explorer 97 sport track.
Went to the dealer about 3 years ago, they changed the tensioner under program recalll 01m01.
The engine performed ok for about 20K miles. Now I have a engine rattlimg noise, almost no torque at all. I thought it is a valve problem due to low cheap octane rated 87. Even if I use high octane with additives the noise won't go away. Sound like valve knoking. They tell me is a valve knocking problem due to excess carbon and they want to " decarbonize" the engine at 77 thousand miles.
I won't let them do it.
The noise is coming back at idle speed, about 1500K, with the engine warm and about at speed of 15miles per hour, sounds like heavy metal
breaking apart. Comes from the same area, left front part.
|For I have read the problem with the tensioner is causing the crankshaft to perform poorly with the new induct sensor timing system that helps the engine to perform at low-end torque.
voila,
Call ford customer service and aske them to instruct your dealerr to change the tensor again. I am doing it since ord extended the warranty to 100K miles.
If you had your tensioners replaced about three years ago, it wouldn't have been under 01M01. ONP 01M01 was released in January, 2001 for the camshaft chain guides. The tensioner ONP is 00M12 which was released in December, 2000 (a year after you had yours done). If your tensioners are indeed three years old, then they should update them with the revised parts that came out in 12/00. If you actually had them replaced two years ago under ONP 00M12, then Ford will give you a hard time replacing them again since their stance is once they've put the updated parts in, they can't fail again. That is pretty narrow sighted approach since Ford did extend the warranty on the tensioners. There was no disclaimer that the extended warranty only applies to the old tensioners and not the new ones.
Also, the tensioners are only covered for 6 years, 72K miles under ONP 00M12. The camshaft chain guide is covered for 7 years, 100K miles under ONP 01M01.
I had the same sound and there were all kinds of "diagnosis" during the time I had it, they dicarbonized and checked the lifters. They finally pulled my oil pan and found pieces of metal and plastic in it. They also acknowledged hearing noise from the low end of the motor. They finally took the time to pull the front of the motor off and found my cam tnesioner in pieces. Being there were pieces in the low end, they gave me a new motor. Now I have this incredibly quick truck with full power and no noise, even after 10,000 miles on the new motor.
To answer the first question...the noise sounds like a metallic rattle, almost like a high pitched thumping or knocking. Really annoying on long road trips. Hope this helps any.
I have a '99 Explorer sport.I had the 00M12 recall done last year and the rattle noise at startup went away for a while but returned.....took it to the dealer last week and had it done a second time.....but the noise is still there!!....for a few seconds at start-up...spoke to ford customer service (canada)....they spoke to my service manager .....he contacted me to say that if the noise is only for a few seconds till oil pressure builds up then that is normal and i'll just have to live with it......customer service tells me to work with my service manager and will not provide me with the name of anyone else to speak to.....so i've run into a bit of a wall here...funny thing is,i said to my customer service rep that if i were looking for an explorer to buy.....saw mine at the dealership, asked for a test-drive,started it and heard the rattle, that would be it for me......and she agreed!!

I have had the truck back three times for what I think are bad lifters, but after reading this post may lean toward the cam guides. The truck only has 38K miles, the problem started around 30K. The idiots at the Ford dealership pulled the "Carbon" card on me. No amount of "dialog" whould make them see the error in that guess. They replaced exaust manafolds claiming that was the problem. The extended warrenty is about to expire and I don't want to get hit with a bill for a cam and lifters.
Only mods are a K&N filtercharger, and aftermarket sway bars. Truck is in mint shape other than the noise.
My 98 explorer sound like a loud growling sound for
about 4 seconds on a cold start. After that sound goes
away i here a ticking noise like a lifter tap. I get the ticking
noise near the back of the engine. Do you here yours in the
rear of the engine? I was told by one service rep that the
problem may be at the front chains and sound is traveling
to the rear where i here it. On hot restarts after about
3 minutes i get a ticking noise that lasts ahout 5 minutes.
