Exhaust for FE360

So I'm getting to the point where I will need an exhaust system for my pickup, and I have read several threads and posts here, and watched some youtube videos, but still, I thought I would ask here... When I got the truck it had dual exhaust, 2 1/2" with an oval 24" long muffler on each pipe. It was badly rusted, and I never ran it with that exhaust, I just chopped it up and tossed it. Some places say that I have to go 2 to 1... I was thinking of just running something similar to what was on the truck when I got it... What say the guru's?

I'm not sure if I'm a "guru" or not but what I did years ago when I had a 69 F-100 with a 360and 3 on the tree. I ran Headman headers and some 24 inch glass packs. There was a muffler shop just around the corner from my house. So I got some pipe that was still in pretty good shape and welded it up in my driveway. It was a true dual exhaust system. I had to gas weld everything cause I did not have any other way to do it. I made the system come out just in front of the rear wheels.

On a true dual you may find that the system will sound a less harsh or have less of a "blat" under acceleration if you install an H-pipe a foot or so after the headers. I find that the H-pipe mellows it out a bit.

360 exhaust

The “H” pipe arrangement also smooths out the engine because of the firing order. I prefer an “X” pipe myself but whatever you do try to have the pipes connected together.
The main problem with headers is the clearance on the right side going over the crossmember. Especially where the collector ends up. The easiest way to connect the end of the headers to the rest of the exhaust is with a “ball socket” connection instead of a flat flange . I had the local muffler shop make up some short male/female sections that I fitted up to the “X” merge on my Coyote set up then had them do the final exhaust out the back.

Thanks! Ok, so I will be using the standard manifolds, no headers, I don't have the extra funds for headers right now... I wil make an X-pipe, then two round mufflers (6" x 24"), and run the exhaust out in front of the rear wheel on the drivers side... that should be ok, right?

Why the driver side specifically?
Seems like the passenger side not only has more room typically, but also since you’re going to make it short and in front of the rear wheel, it’ll be less obnoxious to you in the cab.
It’s surprising how much you hear when it’s in front of the tire.
However, I suppose with actual mufflers and not glass packs or something similar, it shouldn’t be that obnoxious to begin with.
Or are you talking about running duals out both sides? Or running just down one side?

According to the laws here in Sweden, a homemade exhaust system can point backwards or up to a 45 degree angle to the left, either horizontally or slightly downwards…

Not sure on the specifics of your truck, but Flowmaster (owned by Holley) makes exhaust kits for our trucks. The American Thunder Series part #s 817938 and 817934. I did the 817934 for mine since I have the side auxiliary fuel tank. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...l-exhaust.html

I think I got the kit from LMC for my 69 f250490fe.

it clamps together, no fab needed. Very easy. I didn’t put the rear section that goes over the pipes on. I’m satisfied with the quality.

inhave a mini starter. If you don’t then get one or stick with the stock manifolds. Not a lot of clearance in that area.

I have new coated shorty headers and now that the new engine is broken in i plan to drop it off a shop to adapt to the headers, add an h-pipe, finish off the rear pipes.

the stock manifolds are really awful. Any set of cheap headers will help.
