Turn Signal Issues – 12 volt conversion

I converted my 1953 F100 from 6 volt to 12 volt. Everything works fine except for the front parking lights, turn signals, and the dash turn signal indicators. The front parking lights do not light up. When I select left or right turn with the lever on the switch the corresponding front turn light and the dash indicator flash. The rear parking and turn lights all function properly.

I used the American Autowire Classic Update Series 1953-56 Ford Truck #510303 from Carpenters Ford Restoration. The truck already had an aftermarket clamp-on Grote #48272 turn signal switch.

Here is my original wiring matching the American Autowire colors with the Grote colors.

American Autowire / Grote

Horn Relay Ground – Black – G / Not Applicable

Left Front Turn - Light Blue – H / Left Front Turn – Green

Right Front Turn – Dark Blue – J / Right Front Turn – Red

Turn Sw – Hazard – Brown – K / Not Applicable

Turn Switch Feed – Purple – L / Hot Turn – Yellow

Left Rear Turn – Yellow – M / Left Rear Turn – Gray

Right Rear Turn – Dark Green – N / Right Rear Turn – Black

Brake Switch – White & Blue – P (white wire – brake switch, blue wire – 3rd brake light) / Hot Brake – Gray/black stripe

Grote Not Used

Ground – White

Pilot – Blue

I’ve attached the original American Autowire instructions AAW_Instructions.pdf

The Grote wiring instructions are Grote_Wiring.pdf

When that did not work, I contacted American Autowire and their advice is on AAW_Wiring_2022-11-17a.pdf.

That did not work either.

Any advice would be deeply appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Unless I dont under stand / read it right the way you wrote it everything works.
So with the lever to the left what works front and what works at the rear? ie: left front & dash light flash - left rear dose not flash.
Again with the lever to the right what works front and what works at the rear? ie: right front dose not flash but dash dose - right rear dose not flash.

Also do this with park / head lights off and then turned on.
If I under stand right your front parking lights go out when the head lights come on and the rear running lights stay on right?

I think once we know what works and when someone can help.
Now if I did read this wrong never mind

I just went back over your post are you saying when the head lights are on the front park lights dont work but the turn signal lights work front, rear and inside?

See the above post as I dont think the front park light work when the head lights are turned on.
They should work if you pull the switch out 1 click to the park light setting.
If not then there may be an issue.

Yes. Everything works except the front parking lights. Only, I expected the dash turn signals to be off except when flashing. (I believe that is how they were under the 6 volt system). But I'll take that if I can get the front parking lights working.

I used the American Autowire kit for my truck. I assume you are using dual filament bulb for the parking/turn signal lights.

Yes - dual filament 2357LL front and rear. The brown wire is doubled on the left side to extend to the right side. I'm not sure which is the 'high intensity filament' but I swapped the connectors on the front right & left with no change. Still no parking lights on the front. Parking lights work on the rear and flashers front and rear.

Don't know if my wife finds me handy.

Do the parking lights turn on when you do the first pull on the headlight switch.

Ok on your specific American Autowire kit the tail light circuit that comes out of the headlight switch marked R is shared with your parking lights. The Brown wire that feeds your tail lights branches off at some point after the switch and feeds the front parking light circuit. Check power at the brown wire at your front parking light with a test light and see if you have power there.

How is you're grounding? I have the same kit with no issues, everything works fine as expected. I purposely grounded the parking light housing though. I'm overly **** when it comes to grounding.

What type of steering column do you have (stock or aftermarket)? Aftermarket should pick up all the correct wiring, stock may need to be modified.

That was going to be my next suggestion if he had power at the pigtail. i also grounded the buckets on my 53 and 55. Nothing like turning on your headlights and having one or both of your blinker indicators stay on.
